More Baby Food Questions...
Okay, so I have been doing a little research and I have a question for all you parents out there....Baby food grinder vs. Baby Food (already prepared by Gerber, Beech Nut etc). An obvious plus to the food grinder would be money saving, but is it worth the time? Do they get the same amount of nutrition from it? Or should I do a little of both? And if that is the case...which foods should I grind and when shouldn't I grind foods etc? Also, if you do grind up your own food, how do you have to prepare it first? I hear the boiling can get rid of some of the best nutrition in the veggie. Can you take food right off the table, say....mashed potatoes, corn, meat and put them in a ginder? Even if you have added seasoning or milk etc? I just want to understand a little more about the baby food situation. This may seem dumb, but honestly I am at a loss. I have done some research but need help from some real parents who have lived this situation before.

One thing I have done is puree food and freeze it in ice cube trays for little baby sized portions. I know Liz HC has a good baby food book--you should email her.
You got me, I haven't started rice cereal yet because Brianna has had so many issues! I'm afraid she'll be even worse on real food! Good luck! Let me know what you find out! I'll be headed down that road soon too!
Michelle- I did a little of both. I feel like you definitely get more nutrients from making your own baby food and it's much less expensive. I would also buy baby food to have on hand for times we weren't at home or I needed something quick. I would usually steam or bake foods and then blend them. http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/ is a great website for ideas on how to make babyfood and guidelines as to what you should introduce at what age. I really had a lot of fun making baby foods!
When blending up table foods you have to be careful to think about what ingredients make up the food and if your baby is ready for it. We're at a point where we just cut up what we're having into bite sized pieces and Andrew loves it! I think you're getting to a fun stage with Jackson, have fun with it! Call or email me if you want to talk more about this.
ps- I just used my blender and it worked fine. I'm not a huge fan of acquiring tons of baby gear if I can avoid it. I have friends who have loved the Happy Baby Food Grinder.
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the advice and help!
Michelle,
I considered making my own baby food, and ended up just doing Gerber foods for the sake of time. I felt like they were nutritious enough and honestly, not that expensive. But Sophie is a light eater and one container would last us two to three meals, so it didn't really add up very fast. If Jackson is a big eater, it might be more expensive. Now she is getting to where she only likes to feed herself, so we are cutting what we have into small enough pieces and she loves that! You just have to experiment and see what works best for you by what Jackson likes. Good luck--some says are fun and others are frustraiting. But as long as he's eating and getting the nutrients he needs, you will be fine either way you choose.
